Sarah Miller

MA (2005), PhD (2013)

For the past two years, I have been the Regional Director at the Bank of Canada鈥檚 Regional Office for the Atlantic Provinces. In this role, I help oversee some of the Bank鈥檚 surveys of firms and consumers including the Business Outlook Survey and the Canadian Survey of Consumer Expectations. I direct and conduct analysis on economic issues relevant to the Bank鈥檚 monetary policy objectives. I also play a key role in the Office's activities in communicating the Bank's messages to a variety of external audiences and promoting an exchange of views on the economy and monetary policy. I first joined the Bank in 2010 as a Senior Economist in the Survey and Economic Intelligence Division in the Canadian Economics Analysis Department and then I became a Principal Economist in 2018. I am a member and a past president of the Atlantic Association of Applied Economists.

My interest in economics began while teaching English in Japan shortly after finishing an internship to Ethiopia. The economies of the two countries are extremely different鈥擨 wanted to understand why some countries are more developed than others. I entered 欧宝体育鈥檚 Master of Development Economics (MDE) and found answers. During my first year of the MDE, I developed a broader interest in economics. I realized how much I appreciated the rigor behind economic theory and econometrics, as well as the relevance and application of economics in everyday life. From there, I completed a MA and a PhD in economics at Dal.

I have great memories and appreciation for my time in the economics programs at Dal. I had excellent support from professors in the Economics department鈥攖hey helped me build foundations in economics and research that I use daily. I also formed wonderful friendships with classmates that are still strong today.
